The Department of English of H P B Girls’ College, Golaghat has the same year of inception as H. P. B. Girls’ College, the sole college for women in the greater Golaghat region. The Department provides intensive monitoring to the students both in and beyond the classroom. The department is impeccably striving hard for enrichment of English Studies and nourishing the students with deep knowledge and aesthetic attitude. All the faculty members of the department teach with eagerness to appreciate the language in its ingenuity to the students who come here to avail themselves of the course. In the near future the department is hoping to think beyond the pedagogic line by establishing link with other disciplines.
Major features, activities and facilities provided by the Department:
a. The Department holds two monthly tests for the major students of each semester: i. First Friday Test (Objective) ii. Last Friday Test (subjective). Participation in the tests is compulsory.
b. The Department takes one tutorial class for the major students every day. All the major students of respective semesters are equally grouped under each faculty.
c. The Department has a collective forum called Life & Literature. Its tasks are to hold state level students’ seminar, talk shows, various literary and cultural competitions, outreach programmes etc.
d. The Department organizes regular guardian meet for the major students. The problems faced by the students, and the classroom activities are discussed here and adequate measures are taken to redress the issues.
e. A State Level Students’ Seminar is organized every year by the Department under the banner of Life & Literature which is the main forum of the Department. Its motto is to encourage the academic excellence of the college as well as University students of Assam.
f. The Department has a Departmental Monitoring Committee (DMC) which is chaired by the H.O.D. All the teachers and 5 students from each semester are its members. It regularly monitors the general welfare of the major students. One student monitor is appointed from each semester on monthly basis. She monitors the overall discipline of her class.
g. The department has a Whatsapp Group called Classroom where issues related to the major courses are discussed. Students are allowed to put their queries in the group and answers are given by the concerned teachers.
h. Library hours are fixed for each semester in working days. Library work for the students is strictly compulsory.
h. The Department organizes an Inter-departmental Wall Magazine Competition annually.
i. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is organized every month by the Department. The students of the department clean the college campus as well as the departmental rooms.
j. Best Student Award of the Department: The Department is going to offer the Best Student Award to the student who will be selected on the basis of academic performance, conduct, maximum time in library hour, attendance, extracurricular activities, dedication to the department.
The Department has two separate wings under Life & Literature.
i. Confluence: Confluence is a reading club which offers membership to the interested college students of Golaghat District. Its session is held every fortnightly at the college campus. Group discussion on books, poetry reading, showcasing of documentaries are organized by the club. Its current secretary is Ms. Shahnaz Akhtara.
ii. Prabah: The Department has a cultural wing called Prabah. It invites various experts to train the member students on various art forms such as Acting, Dancing, Painting and Singing. The session of this wing is held every fortnightly and is open for all the college students of Golaghat District. Its current Joint secretaries are Ms. Rhitika Hazarika and Trishnamoni Saikia.
Presently, the Department is run by four faculty members with a good quantity of students both in Honours and Non-honours courses.
