The Department of Sociology of H. P. B. Girls’ College, Golaghat was established in the year 1973 with the Headship of Late (Dr.) Joya Buragohain. The Department was established to meet the demand of the students. As the youngest discipline among all the social sciences, Sociology has to go miles even today, especially in North East India. So, introducing the Subject in the college almost twenty five years ago was a great task indeed. Presently, the Department is running by three faculty members with a good quantity of students both in Honours and Non-honours courses. Major features and activities of the Department:
a. The Department has an Academic Forum called Sociological Study Circle. It organizes various academic programmes such as Students’ Seminar (state level or district level), Workshop etc.
b. The Department has a Best Practice activity called Weekend Sociological Discussion (WSD). It holds a sociological discussion in every Saturday among the students and faculties of the Department.
c. The Department organizes an annual memorial lecture in the memory of Late Joya Buragohain, the founder head of the Department.
d. A Wall Magazine, Samaj Darpan, is published by the Department in every year.
